Service Above Self – RGU SVG and Students Respond To A Humanitarian Crisis

“From the ashes SVG will rise again”

A nation that is strong, resilient and beautiful.

Richmond Gabriel University Saint Vincent and the Grenadines contributed to relief efforts on the island, supplying financial assistance, food, water, clothing and essential items to those who were displaced on the island.

Richmond Gabriel University students also rose to the occasion to do their part in supporting and providing to a beautiful island they called their second home for 2 years during their medical education. RGU SVG students in Toronto joined together to make donations of water, food and other essential items for the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines who have recently been affected by the eruption of the La Soufriere Volcano on April 9th, 2021.

The outpouring of concerns and immediate response from our staff and students has been heartwarming. Hamza Sheikh, a Basic Science MD5 student responded by collecting donations from family and friends and started a GoFundMe page to raise funds to purchase relief aid for the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Other students, their friends and family, who also contributed, among others, were Branavan Sriranjan, Jeremy Apeakorang, Rania Muzamil, Shahana Kamalenthiran and Alana Harricharan. All purchased and donated items were delivered to the Toronto Head Office for shipment to St. Vincent.

Other students, friends, affiliates and alumni also contacted the Administration at the Toronto office to offer their support and donations to be sent to St. Vincent, along with relief efforts undertaken by Richmond Gabriel University itself. The distribution of donated items were made to persons from the red and orange zones near the volcano who were displaced from their homes during the evacuation process at the time of the eruption.
